Biography of Mahmood Yakubu.

Mahmood Yakubu

Mahmood Yakubu was born in Bauchi State of Nigeria in the year 1962.

Mahmood had his primary education at Kobi Primary School Bauchi. After his primary
education, Mahmood proceeded to the Teachers’ college, Toro. Later he gained admission into the then University of Sokoto (now Usmanu Danfodiyo University) where he studied history and graduated with First Class Honours. As at the time he graduated, it was on record that Mahmood Yakubu was the first person from the Northern Nigeria, that ever graduated with first class honors in history, and the feat has remained unrivaled and unbroken till date. In a bid to further his studies, Yakubu later traveled to London, where he studied for, and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy Degree with specialization in the Nigerian History.

In support of continuing his education, both the Bauchi State government and the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust awarded scholarships to Mahmood for his studies at Cambridge and Oxford Universities in England. While in London studying, Professor Mahmood became a three time-time winner of the over Overseas Research Student (ORS) Award given to him by the London-based Committee of Vice-Chancellors of United Kingdom (UK) Universities. He also proudly received the competitive Commonwealth Scholarship given by the Association of Commonwealth Universities tenable at the University of Oxford.

In the year 2007, Mahmood Yakubu was appointed the Secretary of the Education Trust Fund (ETF) which is now known as Tertiary Education Trust Fund an establishment he passionately determined to use for the transformation of the University system in Nigeria.

On October 21, 2015, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu was appointed as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His appointment was approved by president Mohammadu Buhari on Wednesday October 21, 2015 at the first meeting of the Council of States of Nigeria.
