Aliyu Gusau Mohammed was born May 18, 1943 at Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria. He is an indigene of Zamfara State.


He began his military career as an officer Cadet at the Nigerian Defence Academy in1964 and got commissioned in 1967 as Second Lieutenant.

After his commissioning, he was posted to 5th Battalion, Nigerian Army as Commander, 1 Division, B Company/ Regimental Signal Officer (RSO). He later became the Commandant of 1 Division Training School/ Reinforcement Unit from 1967-1969.

He was appointed the Commanding Officer, 126 Infantry Battalion from 1969 to 1970 and later posted as Brigade Major, 21 Infantry Brigade in 1970. He was made the Garrison Major, Kaduna Garrison Organization from 1971 to 1972 and later served as the General Staff Officer Grade 2, Army Headquarters from 1973 to 1975. Aliyu also became the Nigerian Ports Military Commandant same year in 1975. 

From 1976 to 1978, he was appointed as the Commander, Infantry Brigade, Abeokuta and later posted as the Adjutant General, 2 Mechanized Division from 1978 to 1979. 

He was the Director of Personnel Services, Army Headquarters same year before he moved to the Directorate of Military Intelligence as Director from 1979 to 1983.

Aliyu Gusau Mohammed was deployed to Defence Intelligence Agency as Director from 1985 to 1986. At the same time, he acted as the Acting Director General, Nigeria Security Organization. He also served as the Coordinator on National Security, State House Annex, Lagos from 1986 to 1989 before moving to 2 Mechanized Division, Ibadan as General Officer Commanding (GOC) from 1989 to 1990. He later became the Chief of Administration, Defence Headquarters, Lagos from 1990 to 1992. 

He was appointed Commandant, Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna from 1992 to 1993. He was deployed as the National Security Adviser (NSA) January 1993 to August 1993. Aliyu Gusau Mohammed was appointed the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) from August 1993 to November 1993. He retired honourably from the Nigerian Army in 1993. 

He floated his own company, Alpha Public Affairs and Consultancy Limited from 1993 to 1999 where he was chairman and chief Executive Officer  before he was appointed for the second time as the National Security Adviser(NSE)  from 1999 to 2006. Upon leaving the office as NSA, he retained his position as the Chairman and Chief Executive, Alpha Public Affairs and Consultancy Limited from 2006 to 2010 before he was appointed for the third time as the NSA from June 2010 to September 2010. Upon relinquishing his position as NSA, he continued to steer the affairs of Alpha Public Affairs and Consultancy Limited as the Chairman before he was appointed as the Honourable of Minister of Defence on 5 March 2013. 

Aliyu Gusau Mohammed attended several courses during his career in the military. This includes: Regular Combatant Officers Cadets Course One, Nigerian Defence Academy.,Advanced Infantry Officers Course, US Army Infantry Centre and School,  Fort Benning, Georgia, USA, Airborne Course, US Army Infantry Centre and School, Fort Benning, Georgia, USA., Senior Officers’ Course, Army Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna.,Royal College of Defence Studies, United Kingdom.,Several seminars on intelligence, security and strategic studies, in Nigeria and abroad.

Based on his achievements in various capacity, Aliyu was awarded several honours and awards such as:Republic Order of National Security, Cheonsu Medal:  Republic of Korea., Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, Das Crosse verdiestkreuz, Germany., Grand Order of Merit of the Republic of France.,National Intelligence Service Medal, Gold:  Republic of South Africa., Order of Emperor Haile Selassie I with Grand Collar (GCHS).,Force Service Star (FSS):  Federal Republic of Nigeria., Defence Service Medal (DSM):  Federal Republic of Nigeria., National Service Medal (NSM):  Federal Republic of Nigeria., Republic Medal (RM):  Federal Republic of Nigeria.,General Service Medal (GSM):  Federal Republic of Nigeria., Meritorious Service Star (MSS):  Federal Republic of Nigeria., Distinguished Service Star (DSS): Federal Republic of Nigeria., Silver Jubilee Medal (SJM):  Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He has as his Hobbies walking and reading.
