Biography of Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel
Senator Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel was born on April 20, 1949. He is from Maigatari
in Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State.  He is a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Jigawa North West senatorial District. Hon. Abdullahi Abubakar Gumel is Married to Hadiza Gumel  and they are Blessed with eleven Adorable Children.

An analytical and political administrator well versed in all aspects of national administrative structure. Abdullahi Gumel is a veteran policy maker who has played key advisory roles in sustaining the Nigerian democracy. He is diverse in policy making and all aspects of nation building with core emphasis on teamwork as an essential skill.

He attended Maigatari Junior Primary School, Maigatari – 1959, Gumel Yamma Senior Primary School Gumel, Jigawa State – 1962, Medical Auxiliary Training School,  Kaduna, Kaduna State – 1963, Bichi Teacher’s College – 1968, Staff Development Center Kano, Kano State – 1972-Basic Stenographers Course, Kaduna Polytechnics Kaduna, Kaduna State – 1976 where he obtained a National Diploma in Accountancy, Bayero University Kano, Kano State – 1995 where he did an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration, Bayero University Kano, Kano State – 1997 where he also did a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Administration, Bayero University,  Kano, Kano State – 2001 where he obtained a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Administration(MPPA).

Prior to becoming a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he was the Deputy Headmaster at GumelGabas Primary School Gumel, Jigawa State – 1969 – 1971, Stenographer at Kano State Ministry of Home Affairs Kano , Kano State – 1972, Senior Accountant at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Kano, Kano State – 1976 – 1979, Chief Accountant at the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) – 1979 – 1983. He thereafter went into private business from 1984. 


He was Convener – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jigawa State – 1998, Elected Member – Federal House Of Representatives – 1999 – 2003 Representing: Gumel Federal Constituency-(Gumel/Maigatari/SuleTankarkar/Gagarawa LGAs), Chairman – House Committee on Special Duties – 1999 – 2000 Federal House of Representatives, Chairman –House Committee on Police Affairs – 2001 – 2003 Federal House of Representatives, Special Adviser to the Honourable Speaker – 2003 – 2007 Federal House of Representatives on Special Assignment, Special Assistant to the President – 2009 – 2011 On National Assembly Matters and House of Representatives Liaison Officer to the President, Special Adviser to PDP National Chairman – 2012 –  2014 On National Assembly Matters.

In the 2015 elections, he contested for a seat in the Jigawa North West senatorial District under the Platform of the All Progressives Congress.(APC) and Won.

It is worthy to note that he headed the House of Reps Committee that crafted the 2002 Electoral Act and at that time these changes were effected:

The power for disqualification/qualification of candidates was taken away from INEC to political parties

The amendment removed all bottle neck and opened space for registration of political parties within 30 days.

Removed tax as one of the items to be submitted by candidates for qualification,

As a House Committee Chairman on Customs, Hon Gumel helped to convince the Executive arm for Customs to keep 5% of their collection for the purpose of staff welfare and other institutional logistics.

Abubakar Gumel and his colleques sponsored a bill that established Border Town Development Authority.

Abdullahi Gumel was also a House Committee Chairman on Police where he brought his wealth of experience to ensure that Police welfare benefits were restructured. 

Under his chairmanship, Police Trust Fund was established and renamed Security Trust Fund which opened the space for multinationals to contribute to the Fund.Other successes recorded as House Committee Chairman on Police include Increasing the numerical strength of the Nigerian Police Force from 150,000 to 300,000.

He Supported the establishment of Community Policing which generated remarkable collaboration among citizens and men and officers of the Nigerian Police.

In 2003 Hon Abdullahi Gumel Was Appointed Special Adviser To The Then Speaker Of The House Of Representatives Aminu Bello Masari, Through Quality Advice From Vast Experienced Likes Of Abubakar Gumel, Masari became the first Speaker in Nigerian history to complete his tenure without interruption despite the inadequacies of our democracy at the time.

The tenure witnessed cordial Legislative/Executive relationship, All Executive Bill were passed but non without proper scrutiny to reflect the wishes of the people.

At the time that the nation was in a cross road due to 3rd term phenomenon, Gumel was a strong pillar of support to the Speaker, his advisory role was at its best and helped a lot in managing the ugly situation that would have brought a setback to our then nascent democracy.
