Biography of Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi
Alexander  Iwobi  popularly known as Alex Iwobi  is a Nigerian born professional
footballer who plays as a winger and a striker for Premier League club Arsenal.

He was born May 3, 1996 in Lagos Nigeria. His family relocated to England when he was just Four Years old. It is amazing to note that he is the nephew of Ex-professional Footballer-Jay Jay Okocha.

Alex Iwobi is extremely versatile, having played in every position from full-back to centre forward as he's worked his way through the ranks at Hale End.

Once his academy coaches figured out the best ways to utilise his talents, Iwobi has now settled in an attacking position where his pace, movement and eye for goal can be utilised.

However, as an upcoming football star to watch out for, one of his priorities would be to improve his strike-rate. Perhaps it is due to the fact that he took a while to settle on a position as he rose through the ranks at London Hale, but if he can consistently add goals to his creativity and clever movement, then he will really be able to stake a claim for regular first-team action.

Alex Iwobi joined Arsenal  at a tender age when he was still in Primary School.  He was initially involved in a first-team match as an unused substitute in a League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion on 25 September 2013. He signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal in October 2015

It is worthy to note that, Alex Iwobi On October 27, 2015, made his first-team debut for the club, starting in a 3–0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Round of 16 of the League Cup. He went further to make his Premier League debut four days later in a 3–0 win against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium, as a stoppage time substitute for Mesut Özil. He also made his Champions League debut as an 85th-minute substitute in a 5–1 defeat against Bayern Munich. Alex  Iwobi started in the first team for the 2015–16 FA Cup 3rd and 4th round home wins against Sunderland and Burnley respectively.

After getting a first Champions League start in a 3–1 away defeat to Barcelona, Alex Iwobi went on to score two goals in his first two Premier League starts in wins against Everton and Watford respectively.

After playing youth football for England, Iwobi elected to play for Nigeria and made his senior debut on 8 October 2015, replacing Ahmed Musa in the 57th minute of a 2–0 friendly defeat to DR Congo in Visé, Belgium.

He was thereafter selected by Nigeria for their 35-man provisional squad for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Arsene Wenger has this to say about Alex Iwobi following his goal scoring appearance against Lyon in Augusts’ Emirate’s Cup. “I like his team attitude, his movement,” “We have a game based on movement and speed, and he integrates that very well. He has good power and is usually efficient – he scores goals a lot.”

Alex Iwobi after signing  a new contract with Arsenal has this to say- “I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, especially with a club like Arsenal who are so big,” he told the club's official website. “I’m happy to sign for them.
“I like to think I have earned it. I have gone through a lot with Arsenal so to have a new and improved contract is very good and I’m happy to have earned it.
“I have had ups and downs. As I was growing up I had a lot of downs but as I get older things just keep getting better and better.
“The ultimate goal is to break into the first team and play as many games as I can.”
