Research by Nigerian Biography, the Nigeria’s No. 1 biography website reveals that Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, popularly known as Justice Walter Onoghen was born on December 1950 at Okurike Town, Biase Local Government Area  of Cross Rivers State.

Upon digging dip, Nigerian biography further found that Walter Onnoghen attended the Presbyterian Primary School which locates at Okurike Town of Cross-River State between the years 1959 and 1965. Nigerian Biography, gathered that when he concluded his primary education, Justice Walter Onnoghen moved to Ghana, where he attended secondary school at Odorgorno Secondary School, Adabraka, Accra, Ghana from the year 1967 to 1972, when he wrote his West African Examination Council (WAEC) Examination.

Walter Onoghen also studied for WAEC (A-Level) at Accra Academy, Accra Ghana, where he was between the years 1972 and 1974, before he moved on to the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana, after gaining admission to study law between the years 1974 and 1977. 

Nigerian Biography, gathered further that that Walter Onnoghen obtained Bachelors of Law Degree (LL.B (Hons)) when he graduated from the University, with 2nd Class Upper Division.

In the year 1977, Walter attended the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, and came out in 1978 with his B.L certificate.

Principal Partner/Head of Chamber of Walter Onneghen & Associates, Calabar (1988 -1989)

High Court Judge, Cross Rivers State Judiciary (1989 - 1998)

Chairman, Cross Rivers State Armed Robbery and Fire Arms Tribunal (1990 - 1993)

Chairman, Judicial Enquiry into the Crisis between Student of the University of Calabar and Obufa Esuk Orok Community, Calabar (1996)

Chairman, Failed Bank Tribunal, Ibadan Zone (1998)

Judge, High Court of Rivers State (1992 - 2004)

Justice of the Court of Appeal (1998 – 2005)

Upon retirement of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mahmud Mohammed, the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) recommended Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for further recommendation to President Muhammadu Buhari as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

On Thursday, October 10, 2016, President Muhammadu Buhari, swore in Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

At the swearing in ceremony, President Buhari charged the judicial arm of government to partner with his administration in advancing the nation’s development. According to the president, the judiciary can effectively perform its constitutional responsibility by ensuring the success of the administration’s anti-corruption campaign and efficient management of the economy.

While congratulating Justice Walter Onnoghen, Buhari said:

“I congratulate the new acting CJN, who comes at a time that the institution that he is going to head plays the role of one of the constitutional bodies at this trying time. In this room contains the constitutional bodies that are responsible for the bringing Nigeria back into line in terms of security and managing it efficiently, while making sure that the economy is resuscitated and that security of doing business at all stages in the country is free and fair,...”

Onnoghen, who is currently the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court, is married with children.
